History

A Legacy of Faith and Education Since 1896
St. Joseph’s Primary School, Walgett, traces its roots to the pioneering vision of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, who championed education for all. Established in 1896 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, the school initially served the local Catholic community. Nearly a century later, in 1995, the educational mission expanded with the arrival of the Christian Brothers, drawing upon the legacy of Blessed Edmund Rice.
Inclusive Education in a Modern Learning Environment
Serving the St. Mary’s Parish of Walgett, St. Joseph’s maintains an open enrolment policy, welcoming children from diverse backgrounds to join its vibrant learning community. The school has undergone significant modernization, featuring refurbished classrooms equipped with cutting-edge information technology to enhance the educational experience.
Spaces That Inspire Learning and Culture
A milestone in the school’s development was the 2012 opening of the New Multipurpose Hall and Language Cultural Centre by Senator Matt Thistlethwaite. These state-of-the-art facilities provide students with exceptional spaces for learning, collaboration, and cultural enrichment.
